#1 Best-Seller(s). . .A Gratitude of Thanks to the Buyers!

Dear Readers/Fans:

Since mid-2013, HUSH has been a frequent #1 Best-Seller on Amazon’s Violence in Society category, particularly with the UK, CA, AU and occasionally U.S., beating out many agented and traditionally published Authors and the occasional Indie Author.  But today I am happy to report that HUSH’s companion, HUSHED has officially reached (earlier this morning) and surpassed HUSH as a #1 Best-Seller putting HUSH at #2 which I thought was “Great!” because since its (HUSHED) release, HUSHED hasn’t been able to reach its peak ’til today. . .So for that I was very pleased.  Currently, and as of this afternoon, HUSH is back to being #1 with HUSHED holding onto #2, and that is more than honorable, more than what any Indie Author could ever hope for their novels.  But while I would like to take full credit for where my novels stand today, I cannot. . .the credit actually goes to the Buyers and their Reviews. . .so THANK YOU Buyers for making HUSH and HUSHED the Best of Sellers!

5 Spoilers that will leave Fans bitter about JANE. ~ Guaranteed.

JANE.:

  1. is NOT a graphically disturbing novel.
  2. gravitates more toward Jane’s freedom from prostitution rather than her being forced to prostitute.
  3. does find love and her real family.
  4. has a happy ending.
  5. is sure to disappoint Fans rather than to leave Fans contented.

As an author I’ve learned that it’s very hard to find a happy medium with Fans when having been part of something that is difficult to let go, or accept that this is the end. I know the feeling because after I read the Twilight saga – I myself, felt empty inside because I didn’t want it to end.  The same will apply with this saga. I’m sure the reviews and the refunds will speak for themselves.

However, Jane’s story will continue. And as I recently told another Fan: ‘Jane is not going to come out smelling like roses. In the end, you’ll probably end up despising her.’

So stay tuned as the second trilogy of the HUSH saga will only get better from here.

the Pre-Order of JANE. cancelled. . .and Why?

Dear Readers and Fans of the HUSH saga:

On September 17th, 2015 I took the liberty of canceling the pre-order of JANE. on Amazon due to a manuscript error. It turned out that I had accidentally uploaded the drafted version of JANE. and not the final edited version. By the time I caught this critical error, I was to late in correcting the matter so therefore I had no choice but to cancel the pre-order for JANE.. So those of you in lieu of retaining your pre-order copy of JANE. on it’s scheduled release date will be notified otherwise.

But stress not, JANE. will be available on or before the anticipated release date of September 20th, 2015. The only downside is that you will have to search JANE. via Amazon’s search bar if you decide on purchasing your copy through Amazon. JANE. will be available on other Indie publishing platforms in time as well as in print.

I do apologize for the inconvenience. And I do thank you for understanding.

On a lighter note, I hope many of you will enjoy the conclusion of the HUSH saga; but as one saga ends so begins another!

Sincerely,

Devlin De La Chapa

Deciphering Amazon Review #210

Every now and then I pay Amazon a visit to check on Reviews HUSH and HUSHED have received over a period of time. And I do this because it allows me to see how the books are rating; what areas the books need improvement in, and lastly, how the public feels about the books. Now I will admit that it is quite rare for me to respond to a Review or Reviews the books have garnished as I view the Reviews more as a public opinion rather than anything else. . .that is until this one crossed my eyes.

Over the weekend I paid Amazon another visit and came across the following Review which is Review #210:

“0 of 1 people found the following review helpful

1Exploitation and Trash

ByOwlwingon August 8, 2015

Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase

First of all, this “piece of work” was downloaded by my 14-year-old daughter’s kindle over a year ago and it was purchased on my account more than once, which I understand isn’t to be done. I believe the book is Young Adult (and it shouldn’t be, if that’s the case). I attempted to access it again, but perhaps I deleted it and had to purchase it again. I don’t know. The ‘novel’ is little more than an apparently successful attempt on the part of the author to exploit a tragic and horribly sad reality in our world. The book is little more than a disguised attempt at titillating pornographic writing and nothing more. To say otherwise is disingenuous, dishonest and I would say, an outright lie. So many writers could write trash like this and guise it as helpful and representative, when the real intent is to get gullible individuals to purchase it. There are different ways to present material like this that may very well be helpful, but the graphic nature of the work is indicative of it’s true intent, again, exploitation, attention-seeking and whatever level of sales. Frankly, there is no need for the author to be so graphic in the telling of the story. Furthermore, as I recall, toward the end the lead character says something to the effect “that at least I got a BMW out of it”, which is a very telling quote because it further represents that the writer is exploiting a tragic situation (as if getting a BMW has any value next to the hell the character experiences). I’m not one for banning books, but this is hardly a book, it is simply garbage presented as something it is not. I am amazed that Amazon.com doesn’t police such writings given the destructive nature of this ‘text’. As impossible as it may seem, would it not have been possible for the main character to go to the authorities given such horrific treatment, as opposed to remaining in the situation, especially when she finds that there is intent to have her younger sister be a part of the exploitation in the future? Perhaps too much to ask, but I think that would have disrupted the intent of the writer, which is clearly to draw unsuspecting and impressionable individuals into the situation to increase sales. Not only would I urge anyone contemplating the idea of purchasing this trash to forego such a purchase I hope that a screening process of some sort could be implemented by Amazon.com to keep pornography off it’s list of choices.”

Okay, now that the Review has been read, ingested, and in my case, detested, I found I was compelled to respond to the Review with my own Review (and I do hope that this Reviewer will read this) simply because everything about it is. . .ahem. . .”TRASH”, False, and it clearly misrepresents what the book is all about.

When HUSH first came about (two years ago, to be exact) I made it a point to include an Author’s note which clearly emphasized on what HUSH was about. Today, that Author’s note no longer exists as it has been replaced with the following and in Amazon’s description box:

“**WARNING**17+ Readers Only**This book is beyond disturbing, and contains disturbing scenes and a disturbing outcome.**”

Does anyone not read before buying? It is clearly obvious that the Reviewer did not adhere to my Warning or she/he wouldn’t have gone out of their way to write such a callous Review, much less, buy the book. Now the only reason the Reviewer stated having to purchase HUSH was because she/he may have deleted it accidentally after it was discovered on their 14-year-old daughter’s tablet. Did the daughter not read the Warning label, as well? Does this family not read Warning labels? And I don’t ever recall indicating HUSH to be a Young Adult novel on Amazon? Nor have I ever indicated HUSH to be a “Pornographic” novel on Amazon, either. Where the Reviewer is obtaining their sources is far beyond me.

Now the allegation about Jane supposedly getting a car for prostituting with the Reviewer’s following quote: “that at least I got a BMW out of it” is entirely false. Again, it is clearly obvious that the Reviewer did not read the book but merely skimmed through the book because if she/he did read the book they would have came across the following:

“My father, along with my mother, took it upon themselves to buy me a brand new BMW for Christmas.

When they presented my gift to me Christmas morning I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to thank my unlucky stars, or cry? Instead, I turned an ungrateful heel and walked out of the living room. It wasn’t until later that morning when my father summoned me into his study. And when he began to interrogate my behavior toward the gift I honestly didn’t know what he wanted me to say, and so I apologized.

“Your mother and I went to great lengths to get you this new car,” my father surmised in great disappointment. “I mean, the least you could have done is looked appreciative. . .for your mother.”

I remembered glowering at my father for trying to pin his disappointment on me. I wanted so bad to rip out his fucking tongue and gauge his eyes with my fingernails ’cause I had saw the gift as an insult, a spiteful slap to my face, and not necessarily a gift from the heart. I plotted to put a bat to it once everyone went to bed but the idea got tossed out the window when my father tossed Josh the keys and told him to take it back to the showroom. I was glad that my father decided otherwise ’cause the car would only pose as a constant reminder to all the men I was forced to fuck just to have it.”

Further into the Review the Reviewer has made reference about the graphic nature of HUSH and I quote the Reviewer: ” Frankly, there is no need for the author to be so graphic in the telling of the story”.  While I agree with the Reviewer I believe I was clear on why for the graphic nature of HUSH in a previous post: Why HUSH is Graphically Disturbing. Again, it is obvious that the Reviewer did not read up on this at the website. Maybe she/he would have grasped a better understanding for HUSH instead of making it out to be: “The ‘novel’ is little more than an apparently successful attempt on the part of the author to exploit a tragic and horribly sad reality in our world. The book is little more than a disguised attempt at titillating pornographic writing and nothing more. To say otherwise is disingenuous, dishonest and I would say, an outright lie.” Is HUSH really an “outright lie”? I’m sure if the Reviewer would have taken the time to research the issue here in the U.S. prior to writing their Review I’m sure she/he would have felt otherwise and restrained themselves for slandering HUSH.

Now as far as “Sales” is concerned in which the Reviewer also emphasizes on: “attention-seeking and whatever level of sales” and “clearly to draw unsuspecting and impressionable individuals into the situation to increase sales” is far from me getting rich. If that were the case, HUSH, HUSHED and JANE. would all read flawless as most traditional books read in part of a good Editor in which I do not have; HUSH, HUSHED and JANE. would cost more than .99 cents if I did have a good Editor; I barely make enough sales to cover my electric bill; and unfortunately I still have a day job.

Now, I also understand that the Reviewer has expressed two issues with Amazon: One, to take a better interest in their “screening” process; and two, I honestly did not know Amazon promoted Pornography as “a list of choices”? I mean, who in their right mind would go searching for Pornography on Amazon? I mean, I’ve heard of searching it over the Internet, but Amazon? Thanks to the Reviewer, now I, along with many others, know.

Last, but not least, and again I quote the Reviewer: “I am amazed that Amazon.com doesn’t police such writings given the destructive nature of this ‘text’.” If Amazon ever got to the point of “policing” such “garbage” (now referring to HUSH) then they would need to police ALL books pertaining to Teen Prostitution and Child Sex Trafficking, and unfortunately there are hundreds across Amazon’s platform as well as others. I mean seriously, just don’t single out my book when others are clearly addressing the same issue but in different scenarios whether in Fiction or Non. All is fair in Love and War, right?

In closing, and in my honest opinion, I believe the Reviewer/Parent got extremely upset over their daughter’s indiscretion and decided to take the route she/he had taken with the writing of their Review. Mind you, the Reader and the Reviewer, I’m not upset, just disappointed that one, I cannot delete the Review; and two, I felt that HUSH was misrepresented by the Review, and I felt it was my job to defend it.

Thank you for reading.

“JANE.”. . .chapter one

Chapter 1

March 1st, 2012

New Orleans

“So,” Viktor said settling himself down behind the mahogany black desk. “What do you think?”

Jonah casually paced his space for a moment, pondering carefully over his boss’s inquiry as to not answer with something he would later regret.

Jonah cleared his throat. “I think if she finds out the absolute truth, she’ll give you hell to pay.”

“Well,” Viktor said reaching into his gold plated cigar box, “the less she knows, the better off she’ll be. Wouldn’t you agree?” he swayed removing the cap around the end of his cigar prior to giving it a solid clean cut with his monogrammed engraved cigar cutter; a personal gift from a past Canadian lover, who to this day, still managed to move him emotionally.

“Agreed.” Jonah replied without a hint of contention, yet Viktor could still sense his doubt.

“Good. Now leave me.” Jonah nodded against Viktor’s request and exited his boss’s office leaving Viktor to his thoughts as he lit his cigar and puffed steadily for a brief minute causing a plume of sweet smoke to bellow up around him. It wasn’t until that plume of smoke had cleared his clouded vision when the double solid oak doors to his office suddenly opened up with anticipation and the crawlings of his past scrambled in carrying a warrant with five shot guns specifically trained on him.

“Viktor Kasa, I hereby place you under arrest.”

As the Agent read Viktor his rights, Viktor couldn’t begin to think of anything else other than the fact on how he admired Jane’s unwavering vindictiveness in which he grasp as no more than a stern gene in their dysfunctional lineage. And the last thing that swept across Viktor’s impassive face as the handcuffs came clasping down on both his wrists was a smile – his mother would have been so proud.

“Viktor Kasa are you aware of your rights?” The Agent inquired. Viktor smirked almost toyingly neither nodding nor verbally agreeing leaving the Agent battling back pride. “Leave us.” the Agent then gestured to the men. The men obediently, yet cautiously drew back their weapons and exited Viktor Kasa’s office. “Alright then,” the Agent then agreed pulling up a nearby chair and taking a seat across from Viktor. “Anna Jane Parker?. . .Where is she? I know that you know where she is, Vik? So I’ll ask you again. . .Where is my daughter?

“Ah!” Viktor grinned. “Things might go a lot smoother, Madam Agent, if you removed the cuffs.”

“Perhaps things would go a lot smoother if I just haul your ass in – ”

“If you think that’s the solution. . .then by all means.”

“Goddamn it, Viktor!” The Agent belted in frustration. “This isn’t a fucking game!”

“If this were a game, Madam Agent – ”

“Oh cut the formality crap, Vik!” the Agent spat in disgust. “It’s Sissy. . .Sissy Young. Remember?” Sissy scolded springing up from her seat and crossing to the credenza where Viktor housed some of his best Vodka; remembering how Viktor was – when he mattered to her – a connoisseur of Vodka, always returning home from one of his illegitimate business excursions with a bottle or two, and always claiming them to either be some rare commodity or the early beginnings to a business destined for global notoriety. Sissy reached for one of the bottles and poured herself a drink. And the second she swallowed the clear, crisp and odorless liquid it was then had she remembered why she stopped drinking, stopped drowning her sorrows in a bottle.

“I thought you gave up drinking?” Viktor casually reminded Sissy.

“I did,” Sissy mustered downing the rest of her drink in one gulp.

“So when did you start back up?”

“Just now.”

Viktor Kasa sighed out amidst Sissy’s private grief to relinquish in his for the moment, remembering that dreaded phone call he made to her on the night her daughter was stolen off his ship; how she wailed like a banshee caught in slaughter; how the receiver thudded hard against the floor; and how the silence thereafter from Sissy literally fainting from the dreadful news coerced Viktor to fly back to Canada that very night so that she wouldn’t grieve alone – he remembered. And it pained him that he still continued to remember right up to this very moment.

Viktor knew where Jane was, where she had been living these past six months, but in his heart he refused, simply refused, to divulge Jane’s whereabouts to Sissy considering that Sissy was a creature of spontaneity, and for her to just show up unexpected, uninvited particularly in front of a girl she hadn’t seen in sixteen years.

“You’re holding back from me,” Sissy accused Viktor when she crossed back to him and stood before him. She was no more than two seconds away from slugging Viktor.

“Violence isn’t going to solve this dilemma, Sissy,” Viktor said reading Sissy’s combative demeanor.

“No,” Sissy then toyed pulling her Berretta from her holster and pointing it directly in Viktor’s face. Viktor’s throat juggled.

“Like I said,” Viktor said clearing his throat and gathering his composure. “Violence isn’t going to solve this dilemma with Jane. So why don’t you do us both a favor and put the gun away. Let’s try and resolve this like civil adults – ”

Sissy chagrined. “And how exactly are we to resolve this like civilized adults here when you yourself can’t resolve this dilemma alone. . .You, with all your so-called “illegitimate connections”?”

“Enough!” Viktor snapped. “And get these fucking cuffs off of me! I’m not a fucking animal. And you sure in the hell’s aren’t going to treat me like one!”

“Do you think Jane enjoyed having those exact cuffs cuffed to her when you and your men entrapped her?”

“Did Jonah tell you this?”

“No. A little birdie did.”

“Goddamn it, Sissy!”

“Sucks, doesn’t it, Vik, to be on the receiving end, and to no fault of your own?”

“I’m not going to have this conversation with you or any other, Sissy, until you release me.”

“And if I don’t?” Sissy continued to toy.

“Then you’ll never know Jane’s whereabouts. Think you can live with that, Sissy. . .I mean, not knowing what you could know except your pride got in the way?”

“You son-of-a-bitch!” Sissy spat suddenly, choking back tears of frustration and regret. “Ugh!” Sissy grunted and gritted between her teeth before she cocked back her gun and shoved it back into her holster. She then stomped around Viktor’s chair, shoved his back forward, away from the chair’s back rest, and uncuffed Viktor’s hands. But before Sissy could collect Viktor’s gratitude for letting him go despite the warrant for his arrest, Viktor was fast on his feet, tossing the chair across the room, and grabbing Sissy by her throat. Within a matter of seconds, Viktor Kasa had Sissy Young pinned up by her throat against the wall. And despite all her pleading tears, Viktor remained unmoved to release Sissy from his wrath particularly against the constant accusation that he was at fault. That he was to blame for their daughter having been stolen.

“Vik. . .pl. . .please. . .I mean. . .what. . .what. . .I mean. . .why. . .are you. . .doing this. . .to me?” Sissy pleaded, choking and gasping for air.

“Because you are as much to blame for Janie as I am!”

“Vik?”

“Because if it hadn’t been for you smuggling Janie on my ship, none of this shit would be fucking happening!”

And with those very last words; words that were not only damaging to Sissy’s ears, it made her understand that in spite of all she has done, in spite of what she had become, Viktor was right – this was all her fault. And she had never seen it like that. . .until now.

“Oh, God,” Sissy said gasping for air, struggling to breathe. “Oh, God!” she then repeated, staggering toward the credenza to grab the open bottle of Vodka but Viktor had already cornered Sissy’s thirst, holding out a bottle of water to her instead. Sissy, without uttering a word of gratitude toward Viktor’s hospitality, literally ripped into the cap and downed the water.

When the hostility between Viktor and Sissy began to subside, Viktor retreated back to his desk and took his seat. And like the legit and hospitable boss that he wasn’t, he pointed to a nearby chair and gestured for Sissy to have a seat. Sissy nodded, and pulled up the chair as close as she could get it to Viktor’s desk, and sat and waited patiently for him to speak.

“I will be honest, Sissy, but I’m not sure about this girl Jane I’ve been consorting with. . .I mean,” Viktor stammered, slightly undoubted as he reached for another cigar, snipping off the tip with his cigar cutter. “I’m not even sure she could be your Janie.”

“Don’t you mean. . .our?”

“I prefer not to go there,” Viktor surmised. He lit his cigar and puffed to his heart’s content.

“What would possess you to come to that conclusion?” Sissy inquired the second the smoke cleared Viktor’s desk.

“Well for starters. . .This particular one. . .This Jane is actually Jane number six – ”

“‘Number six’?” Viktor nodded, puffing his cigar a second and third time. “I don’t. . .I mean – ”

“It’s confusing, I know.” Viktor assured, not the least bit phased by the allegation himself. “The man in question – ”

“Yes. Mr. Parker.”

“Has a fixation with the alias “Anna Jane”. He had named all the girls he had stolen prior to Janie, ‘Anna Jane’.”

“Why would he do such a thing? I mean, what is his MO in that?”

“Maybe he likes the ring to it. Who the fuck really knows.”

“C’mon, Vik. Just give me something. Please.”

“I am ‘giving’ you something, Sissy. . .Information. Information that I’ve only begun to receive myself. And what I’m telling you is that this ‘Anna Jane Parker’ in question may not be your. . .I mean, our Janie considering there have been many prior to her. For all we know, our Janie could be in someone else’s hands. She may not even be in this country.”

“No, Vik. I disagree. You’re wrong. She’s here. I know she’s here. . .in the U.S.. And she’s close. Very close. I mean. . .I can feel it. Can’t you?”

“At this point, Sissy, it doesn’t matter what or how I feel. What I do know is that Andrew, Robert and Dominic Ray are all one step ahead. They’ve proven that already.”

“It’s not your fault that that mission was botched, Viktor. I mean, you did what you could despite the circumstance. American Agents are no different than those abroad. Agreed?”

“Agreed.”

“I think what we should do. . .or you should do is concentrate on finding the truth. Perhaps then after we can find a medium, get our daughter back, and bring those fuckers down.”

“I admire your valor, Sissy, but I think it’s going to take a lot more than justice. This is a business, Sissy. A business worth billions. And unfortunately, our daughter is just a needle in its dirty haystack.”

“I wish you weren’t so negative in your tongue, Vik. It would be nice to hear a little positivity,” Sissy casually affronted as she rose to her feet, leaned across Viktor’s desk and picked up the warrant and ripped it in two.

“Think you can wait another sixteen years, Sissy?” Viktor interrogated Sissy as she left her stance and crossed to the double oak doors.

“I think I can wait an eternity,” Sissy said tracing the brass door knob with her fingers. “If that’s what it would take.” she then added turning around to meet Viktor’s gaze that continued to burn a hole through her back. “You will keep in touch, right, Viktor?” Sissy pressed with a hint of doubt clinging to her tone. Viktor sighed out and merely nodded with that same hint of doubt. Sissy smirked and turned back around to leave, and then the question had hit her. And it was a question that she should have posed since the very beginning when she first grabbed wind that Viktor was hot on a fifteen-year-old trail. A question only a lover of girls would understand.

“Tell me something, Vik,” Sissy said turning back around to face Viktor more intimately despite the distance from across the room. “This. . .Jane girl. What did you feel? I mean, when you first saw her. When you first gazed upon her. . .What did you feel? Did you feel eager. . .anxious. . .Did you feel like you wanted to. . .fuck her?

“. . .No.”

“And those other girls. . .those other Jane’s before this Jane. Did you want to fuck those girls?”

“. . .Yes.” Viktor admitted, settling his cigar aside in the black marbled ashtray, his body rousing uncomfortably in his seat. He knew Sissy was going somewhere with her personal interrogation of him, of his openly private life set against the backdrop of a dirtiest temptation that not only brought him -in the past- so much sexual pleasure but also a lifetime of disgust. And now the question was: Where? Where was Sissy going with this interrogation?

Sissy, having read Viktor’s disquietedness, something she knew he would have never confessed to her or to anyone, something he would have easily taken to the grave if it hadn’t been for the issue at hand, kept a straight and controlled face.

“Well then make no mistake, Viktor, this Jane, this Jane number six is. . .your daughter.”
